Who is responsible for collecting data on this website?

Any data processing on this website is carried out by the operators of this website, whose contact information can be found in section 2 below or under "Imprint".

What kind of personal data are being collected?

When visiting or using this website, the following data are collected: Access data (Server-log-file): IP-address, time stamp of access, queried resources, status, transmitted data volume and the duration of the transmission, referrer URL, name and version of the browser software; the server log file will be stored for 90 days.

Providing data through the contact form happens on a voluntary basis. In particular, the following data are collected and transferred to our institute via email upon hitting send: first name, last name, email address, subject / reason for contacting us, message content. To make a request for statistical consulting you can find a separate form with a corresponding privacy policy. The data will be stored until the completion of the process and purpose they were collected for. Legal retention periods shall remain unaffected.

How are your data collected?

Access data – principally technical data (e.g. internet browser, operating system, time of web site visit) – are automatically collected by our IT system when you visit our website. All other data are provided by the user when entering details into the online forms. Such data may include details provided in a contact form or the form to request statistical consulting.

What are your data used for?

We use your data to process your requests and input. Part of the data are collected to ensure optimal user experience of our website and other data are used to analyze user behavior.

What rights do you have regarding your personal data?

You have the right of access to obtain information regarding the source and recipient of, as well as the purpose for temporarily saving your personal data free of charge. Furthermore, you have the right to demand the rectification, restricted processing (blocking) or deletion of your personal data. You may direct questions pertaining to these rights as well as any other data protection concerns to our data protection officer or to the customer service contact details provided in the imprint. Moreover, you have the right to object to the processing of your data as well as a right to lodge complaints with the data protection supervisory authorities responsible. People affected are entitled to these and other protection rights in accordance with Articles 15 – 22 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

When visiting our website, your browsing behavior may be analyzed, mainly via the use of cookies and analytics. Your browsing behavior is usually analyzed anonymously, i.e. we will not be able to identify you from this data. You can object to this analysis or deactivate certain tools. We hereby prohibit the use of the contact data in our imprint, data we are obliged to provide for an imprint, for the purpose of sending us any advertising or informational materials that we have not expressly requested. 4. Data collection on our website

Server log files

The website provider automatically collects and stores information that your browser automatically transmits to us in "server log files". These are:

  • IP address (anonymised: of 4 digits the last two are removed)
  • Time stamp of access
  • Queried resources
  • Status
  • Transmitted data volume and the duration of the transmission
  • Name and version of the browser software (and operating system if provided)
  • Referrer URL

These data will not be combined with data from other sources. The basis for data processing is article 6 (1) (b) GDPR, which allows the party responsible to protect its legitimate interests. The server-log-file is saved for 90 days.

In isolated cases, namely reported system breakdowns, errors, or security breaches, a manual analysis will be carried out.

Contact form

Should you send us questions via the contact form, we will collect the data entered in the form, including the contact details you provide, to answer your question and any follow-up questions. We do not share this information without your permission.

We will, therefore, process any data you enter into the contact form only with your consent pursuant to Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR. You may revoke your consent at any time. An informal email making this request is sufficient. The legality of data processed before your request to withdraw consent shall remain unaffected.

We will retain the data you provide on the contact form until you request its deletion, revoke your consent for its storage, or the purpose for its storage no longer applies (e.g. after fulfilling your request). Any mandatory statutory provisions, especially those regarding mandatory data retention periods, remain unaffected.

5. Analytics


On our website we use Matomo (formerly called Piwik) to analyse user behavior. Among other things, Matomo tracks data about the webpage visited before ours, which subpages of our website were visited, the dwell time or the frequency of visiting our website.

The IP address you use to access our website will be anonymized. Matomo is set to mask 2 bytes of the IP address (e.g.: Like this the IP address cannot be matched with the device accessing the website.

Matomo uses text files (so-called "cookies") saved in your browser. In order to analyze the usage of our website the information stored in the cookies will be transferred to our computers. These data will be stored exclusively on the servers of the University of Freiburg. These data will not be shared with third parties. There will be no combination of this data with additional data created when using third party services and supplying them with your personal data.

Analyzing the user behavior of the visitors of our website helps us to improve our services and enhance the user experience. This establishes the basis for our legitimate interest to process these data in accordance with Art. 6 § 1 (f) EU GDPR. By anonymizing the IP address we pay due diligence to the right of the user to protection of their personal data.

You can prevent cookies from being saved by setting that preference in your browser; this may, however impede the functioning of the website and stop you from being able to use some functions of the website fully (see paragraph on "Cookies").

Objection to data collection

We offer our users the option to opt out of the data analysis. If you choose this option a cookie signalling Matomo not to collect any user data will be saved onto your system. Please note: Should you delete all cookies after each session you need to reactivate the opt-out cookie in every new session.

6. Plugins and tools

Google Maps

This website uses Google maps via API. The provider is Google Inc., 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043, USA. In order to use the functions of Google maps, it is required to save your IP address. Such information is usually transmitted and saved to a Google server located in the USA. The operator of this website has no influence over this data transmission. The Google maps function is used to help us make our online services appealing and to make it easier for users to find locations provided on our website. This site uses SSL or TLS encryption for security reasons and for the protection of the transmission of confidential content, such as the inquiries you send to us. You can recognize an encrypted connection in your browser's address line when it changes from "http://" to "https://" and the lock icon is displayed in your browser's address bar. If SSL or TLS encryption is activated, the data you transfer to us cannot be read by third parties.
