Department of Medical Biometry and Statistics splits up into the
areas
The
principal task of the division science is the development of
statistical methodology for research in medicine and biomedical
sciences. In cooperation with the respective professional fields the
division contributes to an appropriate interpretation of the achieved
findings by means of accurate planning, target-oriented collection
and preparation of the necessary data as well as problem adequate
statistical evaluation. Research activities with regard to
statistical methodology are embedded into the Freiburg Center for
Data Analysis and Modeling (FDM); they are funded by the German
Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) in terms of
the Research Unit “Statistical modelling and data analysis in
clinical epidemiology” as well as in single projects. An additional
main focus of this division is teachings. Students of human medicine
should get some methodical basics in Medical Biometry, Clinical
Epidemiology and Medical Informatics which are substantial
assumptions for implementing scientific results in the medical
practise in the sense of evidence based medicine. While imparting the
content of teaching a strong effort is put on problem adequate
didactical proceeding. Other courses address to students of molecular
medicine, mathematics and computer sciences and of other areas of
natural sciences. Furthermore the department attends to the
advancement of junior staff by offering the possibility of
dissertation and postdoctoral lecture qualification.
The
workgroup Medical Informatics is dealing with the processing of
medical relevant data, information and knowledge. Medical Informatics
support health care, research and teaching with methods and tools of
computer science. The scientific focus is based on medical
documentation and document investigation; mechanical processing of
medical terminology, architecture of classification, terminology and
ontology systems, development and evaluation of computer supported
teaching material. These subjects demand interdisciplinary and
international collaboration with scientists from the fields of
biology, medical and computer science, analytical philosophy,
linguistics, education science and biometry.
The
German Cochrane Center (DCZ = Deutsches Cochrane Zentrum) is the
official representative of the international network Cochrane
Collaboration (CC) in Germany and a reference centre for the german
language area (Germany, Austria, regions in Switzerland,
Liechtenstein) as well as contact point for people from Czechia,
Slovakia and Hungary being interested in the work of CC. The
notification of CC and its relevance in public of the German language
area, with a view to improve the tranfer of the achieved findings in
health care and thus for the patient information, is a significant
major task. As one of the twelve Cochrane Centers worldwide it is
also responsible for the assistance and coordination of activities of
the Cochrane Collaboration.
Since
July 2007 the newly formed German Register for Clinical Trials is
hosted at the department. The German Ministry of Research (BMBF)
agreed to finance this project for four years. Goals are – among
others – to provide a complete, up-to-date overview of trials
conducted in Germany and to supply the basis for scientific analysis
in clinical research in Germany.
The
division central services combines the administration and scientific
offices, the library, quality management and information technology
(IT).
Furthermore the department carries on a unit Biometry and data
management (BI/DM) jointly with the Centre of Clinical Trials (ZKS =
Zentrum Klinische Studien). The major responsibility of this unit is
biometric support and data management of clinical trials.
Organisational and administrative concerns are incumbent on the head
of the ZKS, supervision is for the head of the Department of Medical
Biometry and Statistics.
