For several years the quality of research in the health sciences has been critiqued heavily. It is argued that serious improvement would be possible if biomedical research is better chosen, designed, done, analysed, regulated, managed, disseminated, and reported. Serious improvements are far from being simple for many of the issues mentioned, but suitable guidance documents have been developed to improve on the reporting of research. Severe weaknesses in this area are unnecessary and can be avoided. Concerning issues in reporting of health science the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) network acts as an umbrella (http://www.equator-network.org/).

Unfortunately, many reviews have clearly shown that the quality of reporting of observational studies is still bad. Many basic items of the study population are often not mentioned and relevant details of statistical analyses are not provided. To improve on the latter issue the REMARK profile was proposed (see item 12 in www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22675273) .  A brief overview of reporting guidelines will be provided. For several studies investigating a prognostic factor or deriving a prognostic index we will illustrate that the REMARK profiles is a key step to improve transparency of analyses conducted. Participants are asked to assess the reporting quality of recent publications and to derive a REMARK profile for each study.

The seminar is aimed at students and researchers who are interested to learn more about good reporting of studies in the health sciences.
